Make Your Own Lip Balm
Making your own lip balm is actually easier than what you think! I promise.
As someone who loses their lip balm a lot (or maybe just the kids are taking them and I’m not really losing them at all), either way its so much more affordable to make them myself. I can whip up a batch and we are set for months!
Now even though lip balm only contains three ingredients, you can chose to add essential oil to yours for an added fragrance. Personally I enjoy adding either lemon grass essential oil or eucalyptus essential oil, but once again totally optional not mandatory.
What you’ll need:
equal parts beeswax
equal parts shea butter
equal parts coconut oil
some sort of lip balm container (stainless tin circle, plastic containers, traditional lip balm tubes, etc.)
stirring spoon
microwave safe container (you can also do this over the stove, place a bowl on top of a pot of water to melt it)
measuring cup/pipettes/something to pour your mixture into said containers
Time to make some lip balm
Add equal parts of shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil into your microwave safe container (or your bowl). I like to use
If using the microwave, on high, heat for 30 second intervals and stir (this should take around 2-3 minutes depending on how much of the ingredients you used. If using a bowl and pot (like a double boiler), then just keep stirring until your ingredients are melted.
At this time is where you want to add in your essential oil (if your adding it), I add around 20 drops. You could easier drop in the essential oil, mix it in well, then using your finger (be careful its hot) and apply a tad to your lips and see if its enough.
Pour into your containers right away, as the mixture cools it will harden (if it happens to harden while your still pouring, just re heat a little bit).
Most important step, let it rest before using. I find within an hour my tubes are pretty solid. But just as a precaution I wait until the next day to use.
Homemade lip balm makes for a great gift!
